The Mage

Synopsis

In Hong Kong’s East Forest Park, filthy scavenger Lan PuiChing (Josie Ho) discovers a corpse hanging from a tree while collecting trash. The gruesome sight awakens a familiar terror: the guilt of a sin she committed thirteen years earlier, which has haunted her ever since.   Lan was once a spirit medium. Blinded by greed, she exploited a vulnerable young woman during a séance and manipulated her into taking her own life. Splattered with the victim’s blood, Lan emerged from the tragedy with a crippling fear of water and recurring nightmares of drowning. Since then, she has been tormented by visions of restless spirits. Seeking redemption, Lan now scavenges not for ordinary rubbish, but for objects believed to retain the spirits of people who died unnatural deaths. By collecting these haunted relics, she hopes to guide the dead toward peace—and perhaps atone for her past.   Police officer Wong Ming (Carlos Chan) begins encountering Lan at a series of crime scenes officially ruled accidental. More unsettling still, she sometimes appears before the deaths have even occurred. Muttering to unseen presences, she insists that the incidents are not accidents. Through her connection with the dead, Lan uncovers a horrifying pattern: the victims were murdered, their deaths meticulously staged as mishaps.   When Wong dismisses her claims, Lan challenges his faith in reason. “Science and medicine cannot explain what is happening,” she warns. “They cannot defeat the mystical.” She then forces him to witness a room filled with twisted, writhing ghosts. Confronted with the impossible, Wong’s rational worldview begins to collapse as the boundary between science and the supernatural dissolves. But Lan’s final warning is the most terrifying of all: whoever is behind the murders may already have chosen them as the next targets.
